Virat Kohli, the captain of an Indian cricket team has criticized the fielding performance of his teammates in T20 cricket against West Indies. Being someone who usually leads by example, Kohli is appalled by the sloppy fielding of the team and he wants them to work on the problem. He says that they need to prepare themselves for the T20 World Cup next year to be held in Australia.
On Friday, in the series opener, Indian had dropped 5 catches and also spilled 3 more on Sunday. This gave West Indies a chance to level up the series in Thiruvananthapuram by 1-1. Virat said that they will have to be brave or no amount of run is going to be defensible.
Rishab Pant being behind the stumps and Washington Sundar at mid-off had dropped catches in consecutive deliveries made by Bhuvneswhar Kumar. This led Lendl Simmpns score 67 not-out out of 45 balls, Evin Lewis 40 out of 35 balls, and Nicholas Porran 38 not-out out of 18 balls. India lost the match by 8 wickets on Sunday.
Kohli said that if they are going to field so poorly, no amount of runs is going to be enough for them. He stated that in the last two games, they had been poor in the field. They had dropped 2 catches in just one over. If they would have been able to get those 2 wickets, it would have helped them to maintain the pressure.
According to Virat, everyone noticed that it is necessary to be braver on the field. In Mumbai, it is going to be a do-or-die match. He is also of the opinion that their poor batting performance in the last 4 overs have cost them badly.
India has lost 7 matches out of 15 T20 matches where they batted first. Kohli had been asked if this is becoming as issues as suggested by the statistics. However, he said that numbers say various things. At times they can say things which are not there as well. As per him, they have been good in the first 16 over while battling as they were on 140/4. Nevertheless, in the last 4 overs, they should have 40-45 runs where they only got 30. It is important to focus on that.
As a matter of fact, India just scored 38 runs in the last 5 over the following 54 off 30 balls by Shivam Dube created the platform for the final assault. The captain said that Shivam’s performance helped them to reach the mark of 170. West Indies had been bowling cutters and an alternation in speed didn’t help them. According to Kohli, West Indies had read the pitch much better than them. He said that they have played a good game and deserved to win.
Virat Kohli was happy that their plan of sending Dube in the third number had worked out wonderfully for them, even if they have lost the game. He says that they knew that West Indies is going to use spinners in the early half of the game and thus, they thought of using Shivam. This plan worked out quite well for them.
He took a catch at the boundary which dismissed Shimron Hetmyer and the Indian skipper feels that it is as if the ball is sticking to his hands. He says that he was committed to the ball and fortunately it stuck to his hands. In the previous game, he had dropped a one-hander.
Kieron Pollard had been happy that the bowlers of the team did a fabulous job as they had been successful in restricting India to 170. He said that the way they batted, they had already talked about how they are going to approach the game and the players have played really well.
He says that there are some players from CPL who have done quite well and they are excited for these young players. According to him, the 4 over by Walsh had been pretty good and Kesrick had also bounced back.
Simmons who is fit once again has done a great job like he had done in the semi-final T20 2016 and Pollard could not be happier.
