Kevin Pietersen, the former captain of England considers Rishabh Pant to be a complete superstar when it comes to Indian cricket if he has taken care of by Virat Kohli, the captain and the team management. The young cricketer has taken a lot of criticism from every corner for his recent poor performance on the pitch. Nevertheless, Pietersen thinks Pants require some time to make his ground in international cricket and understand his full potential.
Even though Pant has been struggling to make an impression with the bat, he is not even close to his best behind stumps. The wicket-keeper under discussion has been receiving criticism from India’s home crows in the home season that has been going on. Nonetheless, he has been supported by Kohli continuously as the first choice wicket-keeper of India in MS Dhoni’s absence, which is presently on a sabbatical from international cricket.
Pietersen observed the under-fire cricketers very closely in the time of IPL and he went on making some mistakes. If someone is doing this continuously then experts and pundits who have played cricket want to criticize as people should be learning from the mistakes they make.
He went on to say that he never realized that he just 21 and thought he is 24-25 as by that age people mature with the game and at the age of 27-30, people play the best sport.
Pant played well and could score a decent run in the 2nd T20 played against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram at Greenfield Stadium on Sunday. He was sent to bat at number five as India needed quick runs and raise the stakes in their innings. Pant did exactly what he had been asked of him and had been able to score a speedy 33 runs from 22 balls by hitting 3 fours and one six.
It was because of him and Shivam Dube, the half-centurion that the team was able to post a total of 170 on the board. Shivam Dube had scored 54 from 34 balls. They lifted the momentum of the game during the innings of India. Nevertheless, even after their excellent efforts, India lost the match by 8 wickets. Pant had been criticized when the team chased the West Indies as he dropped Evin Lewis’ catch.
Pietersen, however, believes that Pant is Indian cricket’s future and he can prove to be an asset for the team with time. He says that is people take a look at the mistakes that he has done, it can be seen that those mistakes have been in the particular position he was playing at. Like Virat Kohli, the captain and the team supporting him and MS Dhoni out at present, he surely has a long way to go.
According to Pietersen, he is going to be looked upon for his performance and he is only 21. This means he still has time to be the complete superstar in Indian cricket and people have to wait for that.
Brian Lara, the legendary batsman of West Indies also feels that Pant should be given time to mature and no additional pressure should be put on him. He said that Rishabh Pant has come into cricket with a great amount of excitement and he has aggression in him. According to him, the Indian public expects a replacement for Dhoni and just like him but he is different.
He says that this is a critical time with the world cup being only 8-9 months away and they might even choose to go with some other keeper but the pressure that he is being put into is just unnecessary.
Virat Kohli has come out in support of the young player and said that they believe in the ability of Rishabh. Like people say it is the responsibility of the player to play well but it the responsibility of people to offer him some space and provide him some support. If he is not given support, it will be disrespectful.
Lara says that they agree with the captain as it is a successful Indian team. These players expect Rishabh to rise above it all with time.
